History

Korean medical circles have grown ceaselessly even during the 36 years of Japanese forced occupation. After the end of Japanese rule, despite the period of turbulence and chaos, each medical specialty has founded its own society. The Korean Surgical Society, formerly named The Chosun Surgical Society, was founded on May 10, 1947 by over 100 members in Medical College of Kyongsong Imperial University (the former Seoul National University) to serve for the advancement of surgery via continuous research and training on surgeons, and to promote friendship and network among the members as well as personal cultivation of the members. The inaugural meeting was held and the bylaw was passed after deliberation. As the first board member, Inje Paik and Sungkwan Jeon were elected as the president and assistant administrator, respectively. One year later, the official name of the society was changed to the current name, The Korean Surgical Society in the second general meeting on August 15, 1948 held in Seoul National University College of Medicine.

Annual congress of the society was held in spring annually from the foundation year to the year 1958, except for the two years of 1951 and 1952, period of the Korean War. From the year 1959 to 1974, the annual congress was held in autumn, and since the year 1975, semiannual meetings have been held in spring and autumn until today.

Until the year 1962, physicians in pan-surgical society were accepted as members after reviewing by the Membership Committee. After implementation of the Korean Medical Licensing Examination by the Ministry of Health and Society in May 1960, only specialists with surgical license are accepted as full members and training surgeons are accepted as associate members.
